Driving Requires Your Undivided Attention

This is long over due...

In July, the good people at Meirowitz and Wasserberg LLP reached out to me and provided a link to an article comparing driving while impaired, distracted and tired. The information in the article is based on information available from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA and a study from MIT; both of which are based out of the United States. The result of these studies and the statistics from NHTSA are largely applicable to Canadians just as well.

The article is worth a read as it provides some valuable information to consider when you are getting behind the wheel. Many people underestimate the dangers of operating a motor vehicle while they are impaired, fatigued or distracted. Each of these altered mental states leads to avoidable fatalities.

One of the points mentioned in the article is that impairment begins at the first drink. Our laws in Canada are worded in a way that follows that concept. See Section 320.14 of the Criminal Code of Canada;; Specifically where it says “impaired to any degree by alcohol or a drug or by a combination…”.

The article reinforces the fact that driving requires your complete, undivided and unimpaired attention.

I have provided a link to the article below and would like to thank the members at Meirowitz and Wasserberg LLP who reached out to provide me with this information and were kind enough to allow me to share it.
